'Here in New Zealand, we have a constant contact
with the water and I find it an important feature of
our way of life. I have an Island mentality. I love
Kiwiana.
The boat, the Bach- the experience and thrill of
being brought up in NZ. the freedom and activities
of a kiwi youth'
Souzie Speerstra, 2001
You can almost hear the cicada's in the background
and smell the salt air, Souzie revives the emotion
and energy of a youthful NZ.
Through the medium of lustrous acrylic on canvas,
she translates this emotion and the icons that
surround it.
Skillfully side-stepping the confines of strict realism
with the method of their creation. The elements are
subtly altered due to Souzie's own hierarchy of
importance
- an action that depends on a strong understanding
of composition and balance.
Colour is a major feature of Souzie's art. Not only
are the colours of NZ at the forefront, but the energy
created by juxtaposition is a critical feature.
She creates illusions such as 3-D, translucence and
texture through the combinations and layering of
these colours.
Souzie Speerstra's commitment to her artwork can be
easily recognized in both technical and conceptual areas.
For the last 12yrs she has displayed 2 styles
simultaneously, introducing an angular abstraction
reminiscent of the 'Blue Rider' Artists, in particular
Kandinsky.
Together these two treatments interact to illuminate
an artist of strength and diversity as well as
overlapping and improving each other...Yin to the yang.
Souzie is included in many public and private
collections and between 1996 to 2007 enjoyed almost
sold out yearly solo exhibitions with SOCA gallery.
