Michael Smither was born in New Plymouth and studied art in Auckland at the Elam School of Art.
Michael Smither is one of New Zealand’s most sought-after senior painters today, for his iconic super-realist and highly coloured paintings and screenprints which capture a unique and often very personal view of his world.
He has held many prestigious one-man shows in New Zealand and Australia, and was Frances Hodgkins Fellow at Otago University in 1970.
Michael Smither is well known for his environmental work, his sculpture and murals, his silk screenprints and for his music as well as for his painting.
He now lives and works on Coromandel Peninsula.

Ages ago when I was at Canterbury University I couldn't decide which subject I should concentrate upon, so instead I studied both zoology and geography, surprised the University and was awarded a double degree in Arts and Science.
In photographic work my scientific analytical eye is expressed in the choices and framing of the camera composition (SLR). The film is developed for me by Focus Photography in Whitianga and in these prints I then utilize my sense of place ( which formed the strength of my geography studies ).
Hence what I call photomage works: the placement of photographs I've taken, developed by someone else and selected and positioned by me to create an expanded statement. It's an expression of the inclusive; by nature I am not inclined to the exclusive, rather the inclusive.
