Former Governor General and Auckland Mayor Dame Cath Tizard will launch the formal kickoff of the Mercury Bay Art Escape at the Opening Reception/Taste of the Tour event at Hot Waves Cafe in Hot Water Beach.
. Dame Cath will assist nationally known philanthropist, collector and founder of the Wallace Arts Trust James Wallace and leading ceramic artist Bronwynne Cornish in recognising two participating artists in this years inaugural Taste of the Tour exhibition.
The exhibition features one work from each of the events 39 participating artists. The works will be on display at Hot Waves through the duration of the Art Escape. Coromandel MP Sandra Goudie will join Dame Cath, James, Bronwynne and other invited guests and artists at the reception, which is also open to members of the public. Tickets can be purchased at Hot Waves and Whitianga and Tairua I-sites.
Dame Cath was the first woman to be Governor General Of New Zealand, holding the office from 1990-1996. Prior to that appointment she was elected Mayor of Auckland in 1983 and re-elected in 1989
In both roles, she was a strong supporter of the arts and has been involved in a number of art and history organizations, including the Auckland Theatre Trust, the Auckland Institute and Museum, and the Auckland Maritime Museum Trust. Since retirement, she has remained active in community affairs as Deputy-Chairman of the Kiri Te Kanawa Trust , and Patron or Trustee of The Variety Club Children’s Charity, the YWCA Future Leaders Program, The Breast Cancer Foundation – and far too many other worthy organizations to list. She entertains herself doing cryptic crosswords, reading, going to the theatre and listening to music and loafing at Otama Beach admiring the Coromandel views.
She has strong family links to the Coromandel Peninsula where the Tizard family has a holiday home and where she has served as patron of the Coromandel environment group Kauri 2000.
Dame Catherine was awarded a DBE in 1985 and received a GCMG in 1990. In 2002 she was made a member of the Order of New Zealand.

There will be introductory remarks from our celebrity guest.
Each artist will have the opportunity to place one piece of art in the planned ‘preview’ exhibition, 'Taste of the Tour' which will remain over the duration of the Art Escape dual weekend - 9 days. This is to be held at Hot Waves Café at Hot Water Beach, and will begin on the first day of Art Escape, Friday 26 Feb, with a special Opening Event to be held that evening.
Hot Waves Cafe will provide the venue, music, and gallery space; Cathedral Cove Macadamias & Aqua Culture Pacific will provide upscale hors d’oeuvres, and Ohui wines will provide the wine.
Noted NZ art collector James Wallace, founder of the James Wallace Arts Trust has agreed to attend and judge the 2D portion of the ‘Taste of the Tour’ exhibition along with Bronwynne Cornish, well-known ceramic artist, who will judge the 3D portion of this exhibition, and both will be presenting awards in these categories. There will also be a ‘Peoples Choice’ award, which will be announced at the conclusion of the exhibition.
