March 7-10, 2008 Coromandel Peninsula - New Zealand |
About the Mercury Bay Art Escape 2008
The volcanic, beautiful but remote Coromandel Peninsula, long a destination for holidaymakers intent on hiking, fishing, and bathing, has attracted permanent and part-time residents including the musicians, sculptors, painters and crafts folk, whose life-style and products expand the regions attractions. Emphasizing the artistic contributions of the Mercury Bay area is the aim of the group of artists who formed in 2005 to work with the Department of Conservation installing Japanese artist, Akio Hizume’s, “Democracy Steps to Lonely Bay”. Mercury Bay Cultural Weekend followed in 2006.
Mercury Bay Art Escape 2008, the group's second weekend of studio events, is scheduled to occur from the morning of Friday, March 7th and continue through Monday, March 10th. 25 artists whose media include – wood, stone, bone, plaster, ceramic, fiber, oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink, collage, photography and printmaking will open studios to visitors. There may be some workshops. Two galleries will show unique work.
Special events include a Friday evening meet and greet with food and entertainment and Eggsentric Restaurant. On Sunday afternoon Diana Morcom presents a Classical Piano Recital that will be followed by a wine festival at the Cooks Beach Vineyards.
