Whitianga Art Group

The Whitianga Art Group was formed in 1979 by an enthusiastic group of students as an extension of the evening classes being held at the Mercury Bay District High School, and now boasts approximately 50 members.

The Whitianga Art Group is housed in an historic building which dates back to the gold mining days.  It was originally built in 1892 as a hall for the Kuaotunu Primary School, then, in 1955 when the Kuaotunu School was closed, it was moved to School Road, Whitianga, to become part of the Mercury Bay District High School.  In 1982 the Mercury Bay District High School became the Mercury Bay Area School and moved to its present location on South Highway.  The hall became redundant to the Education Department’s needs and was purchased by the Art Group in 1989 and moved in one piece to its present position at the end of School Road.

Members meet every Thursday and Friday to make art, learn and socialize in a friendly and supportive environment, and Tuition Workshops by well known artists are held regularly throughout the year.  Non members are always welcome to join in.

The group holds a major, month long, exhibition of new work every January which features work by a well known guest artist and is preceded by a popular Opening Night.  Two smaller exhibitions are held over the Easter and Labour Day long weekends.

During the Mercury Bay Art Escape the centre will be open every day and various members will be working onsite in a variety of mediums. There will also be a display of member’s work which will be available for sale.
